The clear market favourite and the editorial pick, Juan Les Pins is a nine-year-old who has rediscovered his best form this spring — three consecutive top-three finishes including a win at Thirsk last month. He's the only horse in this field drawn from a strong run of recent form, and his record on normal conditions is the concern (just one win from 18 races), though on quicker ground he has won 4 from 9, and today's conditions sit somewhere in that bracket.

Trainer Quotes
Mar 2023
"He was bought by his owner out of a claimer at Redcar in the summer from Ed Dunlop, so I can't take any credit for such a smart purchase. He has been a joy to train and the improvement has been very swift, as having started off on 72, he's now up to 93 as we look forward to this year. He won three on the bounce for us but his last run when third in the Ayr Gold Cup was very smart form. He has really pleased me with how he's done over the winter and I'd like to think he hasn't hit the ceiling of his ability yet. He'll be aimed at the big 6f handicaps and the Ayr Gold Cup is likely to be his main target again. 22-03-23"

Tokyo Joe won last time out at Lingfield nearly five months ago, making this a comeback run after a lengthy break — the longest absence of any runner likely to challenge near the front of the market. The horse has never won on a left-handed galloping track in five attempts, and Ascot falls into exactly that category, which is a notable obstacle on return.

True Promise has been knocking on the door in recent weeks — runner-up at Wetherby 13 days ago and at Kempton before that — making this one of the fresher pieces of form in the field. The problem is that today's normal conditions have produced no wins from six career attempts, and this horse's best numbers come over slightly longer distances than today's six furlongs.

"He was just a bit immature last year and we had to mind him a little bit. He progressed after winning on his debut at Newcastle in January and followed up under a penalty, but the handicapper hasn't missed him. He's very laid-back and not until we run him will we know if he can keep progressing off that mark, but we're hopeful he can and looking forward to getting him on turf. 04-04-24"

Dicko The Legend was beaten by the narrowest possible margin — a dead heat effectively — at Southwell just ten days ago, so arrives here in sharp form and with confidence. This six-year-old has raced 39 times across its career, making it one of the most experienced horses in the field, though it's worth noting that experience hasn't yet extended to a win on right-handed sharp tracks or at Southwell specifically in five tries each.

Neyva's Angel carries the lowest weight of any runner in this 19-horse field, which is an advantage in a race where every pound matters, and jockey Oisin Murphy is in the best riding form of anyone here — five wins from 15 rides in the last two weeks. The big unknown is ground: this horse has never raced on normal conditions before, so nobody can say with certainty how today's turf at Ascot will suit.

Second in the market at 11/1, Cajetan is the most obvious threat to the favourite according to the editorial verdict, but the recent form makes that faith hard to fully justify — three finishes of 10th, 10th, and 4th in his last three races. His record on normal conditions is also a concern, with no wins from five attempts on good ground, and he hasn't raced at a track like Ascot's wide, galloping circuit to best effect.

The Bitter Moose has a decent record on normal conditions with two wins from six races on standard ground, but today's turf at Ascot presents different questions — this horse has never won on a right-handed galloping track in five attempts, and Ascot is precisely that. A 17th place at this course in October last year is the most recent Ascot evidence, and it doesn't encourage.

Thunderous Love has the best career win rate in the entire field — six wins from 26 races, roughly one in every four — and on fast, dry ground that record climbs to four wins from nine, a remarkable 44%. Today's normal conditions are softer than where this horse thrives, with no wins from four attempts on good ground, but trainer Jonathan Portman is in the best form of anyone in this race, having won four from 11 in the last two weeks.

Waistcoat has the most compelling ground and distance profile of anyone in this field — three wins from five races on normal conditions, and four wins from seven races at today's six-furlong trip, a win rate of better than 1 in 2 at this distance. The catch is a 108-day absence since his last run and a record of zero wins from eight attempts on right-handed galloping tracks like Ascot, which is a significant red flag.

Arantes Nascimento won at Kempton a month ago and arrives here in the best recent form of his career — a win plus three second-place finishes in his last six races. However, today's normal conditions are a concern: no wins from six attempts on good ground, and this horse has found its best results on slower surfaces.

Serenity Dream is the lowest-rated horse in the field, sitting four pounds below the field average, and races again after just seven days — back quickly following an eighth-place finish at Goodwood last week. Despite winning at this trip before, this horse has never won from nine attempts on left-handed galloping tracks, and Ascot fits that profile exactly, making the task look steep.

At 23/1, Lord Roxby is one of the bigger outsiders in this 19-runner field, and the recent form does little to argue the case — a distant ninth at Beverley last time out followed a long absence. There are nine top-three finishes buried in this horse's career record, but converting them into wins has been the problem, and a draw in stall 8 at a course where low draws perform best offers little extra help.

Azure Zain has never raced on normal conditions — every previous start has come on different surfaces — so today is genuinely uncharted territory for this four-year-old. That makes it almost impossible to assess how the horse will handle the ground, and an 11th-place finish at Southwell three months ago as the most recent run adds little confidence.

Twilight Jet has one of the most striking career footnotes in this field — a Class 1 win at Newmarket in 2021, which represents the highest-quality victory of any runner here. That said, this horse has never won on normal conditions in six attempts, and four consecutive finishes outside the top three since 2022 suggest those elite days are well behind it now.

Fantasy Master is the longest absentee in the field by some distance — this eight-year-old hasn't raced for 156 days — and returning from a five-month break is always a risk, particularly in a 19-runner field at a competitive track like Ascot. The most recent run was a win at Chelmsford before that break, and a Class 2 victory at Nottingham sits in this horse's career record, but today's right-handed galloping track is a format that has produced no wins from nine career attempts.

Rage Of Thunder raced at this very course just eight days ago and finished 15th, so the form here is recent, visible, and not encouraging. This four-year-old has never won on normal conditions in five attempts, has never won on a right-handed galloping track in five attempts, and those two facts combine to make Ascot look like a difficult fit.

Hectic draws stall 1, the best possible position at a course where low draws hold an advantage, and this horse's record over sprint distances is genuinely solid — three wins from 11 races between five and six-and-a-half furlongs, a rate of better than one in four. Jockey and trainer are pairing up for the first time today, which introduces some uncertainty, and the recent form shows consecutive fourth-place finishes rather than a winning run.

Daring Legend is one of the more puzzling runners here — rated 79, one of the higher marks in the field, yet available at 41/1 in the market, which suggests punters know something the rating doesn't show. A near-miss at Kempton just over two months ago hinted at ability, but a 15th-place finish at Newbury last time out and a jockey-trainer partnership yet to win together in five attempts make this hard to back with confidence.

Cressida Wildes arrives here after a win at Wolverhampton in February, which is the most recent completed form we have — the Chelmsford run after that has no finishing position recorded. She's another well-rated runner drifting out to big odds at 36/1, and with no wins on the normal conditions that today's track offers, there are question marks about whether this ground will suit.

How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
