Cajetan

Cajetan opened its account at Newcastle in March 2024 and returned to the same track in December to win again. That second win, on the all-weather surface in winter conditions, fits neatly with what Carr said on a stable tour last October: the horse had gone two from two on the all-weather in spring, winning at Newcastle and Kempton, before a difficult summer interrupted its season. When Carr describes a horse as her trainer's pick for the months ahead and points it deliberately towards the all-weather circuit, that is not throwaway praise — a yard that has sent out 63 winners this season knows what its horses are capable of.

The recent form reads 18-4-10-10-10-3, meaning Cajetan has not won in its last six races, and that December victory is now 17 months in the rearview mirror. Some of those efforts have been respectable — a third-place finish is in there — but the horse has clearly not recaptured the sharpness of its best days yet. Normal ground suits it well, with 2 wins from 10 races on a standard surface, and it tends to be competitive at Class 4 level, winning 3 of its 9 races at that grade, which is 1 in every 3 — a genuinely strong return for that tier. Jockey Edward Greatrex has ridden it in five of those races, winning once, and the partnership looks set to continue. The question is whether the combination of a sympathetic track, familiar ground, and a trainer who clearly has faith in it can unlock another Newcastle moment.
