Keep it on a decent surface, and Waistcoat becomes a genuinely different proposition. Similarly, at the shorter distances — five to six-and-a-half furlongs — the record reads 4 wins from 8 races, meaning Waistcoat wins exactly half its races at those trips. For context, most racehorses would be delighted to win a quarter of their races at their optimum distance. At sprint distances on normal ground, this horse is a serious contender.

The partnership with jockey Rhys Clutterbuck is also worth noting. In six races together, they have won 2, which translates to 1 in every 3 — a win rate that any jockey-horse combination would be proud of. When you see Clutterbuck booked for Waistcoat, that is a combination that has demonstrably clicked.
