That is a dramatically better return than his overall record, and it tells you something important: stretch him out longer and he tends to find his limitations, keep him sharp and compact over a sprint trip and he becomes a genuine contender.

He competes mostly at Class 5, which sits toward the lower end of British racing's ranking system. At that level he has won 1 from 5 races, a 20% win rate — roughly 1 in every 5 goes. For the grade, that is a workable record, and it confirms he is placed in the right kind of company. Sending a horse up against tougher opposition before he has earned it is a common mistake; Tokyo Joe's team has avoided that.

The trainer is Ed Walker, who operates out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, one of the sport's most respected training villages.
