TrackLab Insight
Uncle Sam is the market favourite and top-rated by a narrow margin, but his 6% win rate from 17 races—just one victory in nine months—reveals a horse struggling to justify that confidence. Drawing stall 1 is ideal for a sprint, yet his recent form shows only one second place in his last six runs, and he's never won at Thirsk despite five attempts, suggesting he lacks the consistency to dominate a tightly-matched field.

TrackLab Insight
Tickets is the second course specialist here with 3 wins from 21 Newcastle races and a 12% career win rate, making him genuinely effective at his level. His recent fourth-place finish at Thirsk was just 1.0L away, and he has form on faster ground (33% win rate on good-to-firm), but the 98-day gap since his last competitive race (the Ripon fifth) raises freshness questions in a race where recent racers hold sway.

Trainer Quotes
Aug 2022
"He is a lovely young horse who runs in the well-known green colours of John Fretwell. He has only raced four times in his life, winning his penultimate start at Kempton. I thought his most recent run, when second in his first handicap was a lovely effort and hopefully we can get him out on the turf before the season ends, but he needs it on the soft side. He will continue through the winter on the all-weather as he is still progressing, and we can up him to 1m when the time is right. He is on a fair mark of 77 and I would be disappointed if he was not a nice bit better than that. 29-08-22"

Tomorrow Day is the only runner with a genuinely strong record on this ground (3 wins from 20) and at this distance (4 wins from 19), plus he's the course specialist here with 5 wins from 17 Newcastle races—a 29% win rate that dwarfs his rivals. The 176-day absence is a real concern, but his last two Newcastle runs ended in near-misses (beaten 0.5L and 0.1L), suggesting he retains sharp form.

Desert Master carries the lowest weight in the field and has raced twice at Newcastle recently (third, then an unknown result 14 days ago), yet his 4% career win rate across 50 races tells the harshest story—he's won just twice and has never won at Newcastle in 17 attempts. His win rate of roughly 1 in 25 races is the worst in this field by some distance, making him a poor prospect despite the weight advantage.

"Another who is bred to be both fast and early. The dam was a useful black-type two-year-old for us but so far hasn't produced anything. Hopefully by sending her to Blue Point she can enjoy some overdue success. I have him entered this week and again he has done plenty of work. 19-04-23"

Em Jay Kay is one of just two course winners here and carries a +4 rating advantage, but the form picture is deteriorating—three consecutive mid-field finishes across different tracks suggest he's struggling to find his feet. His win rate of roughly 1 in 9 races is respectable, yet he has zero wins on any ground type faster than soft, which rules out his effectiveness on this standard surface.

Little Beck Annie is the least experienced runner in this field with just 8 career races, and her recent Carlisle win came 80 days ago against no strong pace. At only 12% career win rate with just one victory from eight starts, she's a maiden (first-time winner) being asked to step up significantly; even her decent record on good ground (1 win from 3) won't help on this standard surface.

Rain Cap is nine years old and well-versed at this grade with 6 wins from 63 races, but he carries a damning record on standard ground (0 wins from 11 starts)—exactly the conditions he faces today. His recent form has been mid-field, and crucially, he has never won at Newcastle in 7 attempts despite being proven on the all-weather elsewhere; the likes of Catterick suit him better than this track.

Sadiiki is the lowest-rated runner here and the only horse alongside Aurora's Doublesix with no wins in her career (0 from 10), but the critical difference is a 119-day absence—she hasn't raced in nearly four months, which in sprint company is a significant freshness concern. Her two Newcastle starts ended in last place finishes (14th and 12th), making her unsuited to this track and unable to find any advantage from the layoff.

TrackLab Insight
Aurora's Doublesix is winless from 20 career races and has never placed either, a 0% record that stands alone in this field for pure futility. Recent form shows a fifth and two more fifths across her last three runs—she's competitive enough to stay in races but never good enough to finish the job, and at 201-1 odds, the market has correctly identified her as an outsider with no wins to her name.

How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
