Desert Master

Southwell, a floodlit all-weather circuit in Nottinghamshire, is where Desert Master comes alive. He has won there twice from eight attempts — a 25% win rate at that particular venue — which is a remarkable contrast to the grind he faces almost everywhere else. For context, across his 31 races at the lowest level of the sport in Britain, he has won just twice. He is not a horse who makes things look easy, but at Southwell over short distances, something clicks. In the seven races he has run over sprint trips — anything under five furlongs — he has won twice, a rate of 1 in every 3.5 races. That is a genuinely sharp record and suggests a horse who is built for speed when the conditions suit.

Antony Brittain, who trains him from a yard in Warthill in North Yorkshire, always believed pace was in Desert Master's blood. His dam was a useful black-type two-year-old — meaning she competed at a higher level than most — and Desert Master was sent to Blue Point, one of the fastest horses of his generation, in the hope that combination would produce something quick. Brittain's yard has sent out 22 winners this season, so he is no small operation, and he clearly knows how to place a horse to land a race.

The curious footnote is the partnership with jockey Cam Hardie. Hardie has ridden Desert Master 21 times — nearly half his entire career — and they are yet to win together. That is 0 from 21, a barren run that would try the patience of anyone involved. Desert Master's two victories have come with other jockeys in the saddle, which is one of those small, stubborn facts that hangs in the air. He last won in January 2025, and his recent run of form — two second-place finishes in his last six races — suggests he is knocking on the door again.
