Masterclass has won at this course and distance before, which is a meaningful tick in a field where that experience is rare — only Bang On The Bell shares it. He also has Oisin Murphy booked, one of the best jockeys in the sport, which is an upgrade in the saddle. The serious concern is his record on normal ground: zero wins from 19 races on that surface, and today's conditions are normal.

"He won well at Nottingham then ran another solid race at Redcar, where he was unlucky and got struck into behind. He has run well since but disappointed last week at Nottingham as he had a perfect pitch and at the furlong-marker I thought he was going to win but he didn't pick up, for whatever reason. 14-08-25"
The market has made this the joint favourite, yet Sonic Si has never won a race in 13 attempts — making him one of several winless horses in this field who punters are being asked to trust. An added complication is that he has never raced on normal ground before, having run exclusively on artificial surfaces, so today is genuinely unknown territory for him. Finishing third last time out is encouraging, but a first win here would be a surprise.

"He's been rock-solid and deserves to win a race as he keeps bumping into one. We never thought he was going to be a two-year-old as he's a monster of a horse, but after every week of work he kept coming back for more. We're going to give him one more run at Catterick on Friday and then we'll probably have him gelded. His wind just catches him out in the last 50 yards of a race and he probably wants that doing as well some time. He was bought for only 1,000gns but I think he could be all right. He'll be a lovely horse for next year. 30-05-24"

The most experienced horse in the field by a distance — 69 races compared to the field average of 28 — and crucially, he has already won over this exact course and distance at Nottingham. That course form is rare in this field and gives him a genuine edge on paper. However, his last six results read 8-3-8-7-8-7, so the wins are becoming harder to find despite all that experience.

The best career win rate in the field — winning roughly 1 in every 6 races — and his record on normal ground is strong at 3 wins from 11 races (27%). The problem is his recent form has completely fallen away, with finishes of 14th, 11th, 14th, 14th in four of his last six runs before a modest sixth last time out. Something has clearly gone wrong for this horse since his better days.

The standout horse in this field by official rating — ranked 5lbs clear of most rivals — and he arrives here on the back of a win at Catterick just eight days ago. That penalty adds a little extra weight to carry, but this is the form horse in the race. The big concern is his draw in stall 12: at this course and distance, horses drawn high (12 and above) win only 4% of races, which is a real disadvantage.

The longest absence in the field by far — 341 days off the track — makes Timebar one of the biggest question marks here, regardless of anything else. Horses returning after nearly a year away rarely hit peak form first time back. The small positive is that his last run, almost a year ago, was a second place at this very course, but zero wins from 15 career races offers little reason to get excited.

Another winless horse in the field, with zero wins from 13 races, and the additional concern here is a five-month absence since he last ran in February. Horses returning from that kind of break often need the race to blow away the cobwebs before they're fully fit. Two third-place finishes just before that break show some ability, but there's a lot to overcome today.

At nine years old, Diamondsinthesand is the oldest horse in the race and is drawn in stall 14 — the highest draw in the field, which is statistically the worst place to be at this course and distance. His last three runs all resulted in seventh or eighth, and his record on normal ground (today's conditions) is one he has never won on. The market agrees, pricing him at 34/1.
One of the more successful in the field (5 career wins)
Thirty-five races deep into his career, Poetic Jack has won just twice — roughly once every 17 races — and his most recent run was an eighth-place finish beaten nearly nine lengths. His record on left-handed galloping tracks like Nottingham is concerning: zero wins from eight attempts on that type of course. The experience is there; the form is not.
Winless from 13 career races and one of several horses in this field still searching for a first win. His form has been patchy — a second at Wolverhampton two months ago raised hopes, but a seventh and a fourth since then have dampened them. Rated 3lbs below the field average, he has a lot to find on paper against the better-handicapped rivals here.
Like several rivals today, Charging Bull has never won a race — zero wins from eight attempts — and has never raced on normal ground before, making today another unknown for him. His best effort recently was a second at Wolverhampton 40 days ago, but an eighth-place finish 29 days ago erased much of that encouragement. Hard to make a case for him at 23/1.
Eighteen races into her career without a single win, Nad Alshiba Snow has settled into a familiar pattern of finishing third, fourth or fifth without ever threatening the lead. All of her recent runs have come on artificial tracks, and today on turf in normal conditions is a different surface challenge entirely. Hard to see where the win comes from.
Zero wins from 23 races is a tough record to look past, and a 14th-place finish at Thirsk last month is the most recent evidence. The jockey-trainer combination has managed just one win together from 27 races, which adds little confidence. There's no compelling reason to think today changes things.

The most interesting angle on Dunnington Lad is his record in today's conditions: he wins 38% of his races on normal ground — three wins from eight attempts — which is the best ground record in the field for today's conditions. He also has more wins over this exact five-furlong trip than any other distance, suggesting it suits him well. The catch is recent form that reads two ninths and an unseated rider, so he'd need to rediscover something close to his best.

How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
