Poetic Jack

Both wins have come at different venues — the first at Chelmsford in November 2023, then a second at Lingfield Park in December 2024 — which tells you this isn't a horse that only fires on one particular track. What it does suggest is a horse that finds its moment occasionally, rather than consistently. Ten places from 36 races means Poetic Jack finishes in the frame reasonably often; it's competitive, it just rarely gets its nose in front. For context, 12 of those 36 races have ended with a cheque for the yard, which at Class 6 level — the entry-level tier of British racing — still means something.

The partnership with jockey Marco Ghiani is the most striking number in the file. Together they've won 2 from 14 races, which is 14% — roughly 1 in every 7. That might sound modest, but it's more than double Poetic Jack's overall win rate. Ghiani clearly gets something out of this horse that others don't, and the fact the two keep being put together suggests Robert Cowell's yard in Newmarket has noticed the same thing.

At distances of seven furlongs to a mile, Poetic Jack has won 1 from 10 — not headline-grabbing, but those are the trips where it's most competitive. Recent form reads 6-8-4-5-2 in the last five completed runs, with a second place in there that hints at the horse still being willing and interested. It raced just yesterday, which means whatever else is true, this is a horse that stays sound and keeps turning up.

Eighteen months since the last win is a long time to wait. But with 24 winners already sent out by the yard this season, Cowell clearly knows how to find the right race for the right horse. Poetic Jack's time may come again — it just hasn't yet.
