Market favourite at 4.4 and trained by Andrew Balding (a 56-win partnership with P J McDonald), but the colt has never raced on normal ground, leaving a significant question mark about how it will handle the Southwell tapeta. Recent form is mixed — just one win from seven races overall, with a narrow 2nd at Newmarket 87 days ago being the highlight.

The standout specialist here: two wins from just four Southwell runs, including a victory at this exact distance just 39 days ago, and a career win rate of 1 in 5 (best in the field). This four-year-old thrives on standard ground (33% win rate) and is built for 7f–1m, ticking every box for today's conditions.

The editorial pick sits right at the top of the market and for good reason — this five-year-old is building serious momentum with a progressive profile and backing from one of the season's hottest stables (42 winners already). On good ground and at this distance, Cogitate wins roughly 1 in 7, but the elephant in the room is a complete blank on standard-to-slow ground (0 from 6), making today's normal surface a genuine risk despite the overall endorsement.

"He wants fast ground and conditions will be key to his chance. I think a stiff mile will really suit him and he already has some decent form in the book. We were looking to get another run into him before the Britannia, but 93 is a good mark and we've decided to keep our powder dry. He bumped into a good horse in Night Raider on his comeback at Southwell but still ran well and wasn't 100 per cent wound up for that. He's done a couple of nice pieces of work recently and there should be good improvement in him. He's a horse who runs well fresh and I hope he's a Group horse. 13-06-24"

"He's a lovely, big colt we bought last year. He has a very good attitude and does everything we ask of him at home. He'll be a lovely horse next year but before then he should be okay as a juvenile as everything he has done on the bridle makes me think he's a useful colt. 21-06-23"

Only recently found the winner's enclosure at Haydock but shows genuine promise at this trip (33% win rate over 7f–1m) and on good ground. The problem: we've seen just nine races total, there's a damaging 11th place from just 47 days ago at Yarmouth, and a 19-length defeat sticks out like a sore thumb.

"He nearly won first time out at Lingfield in November when sent off at 125-1, but then we ran him back a bit quickly afterwards. He ran a nice race on his seasonal return at Kempton in April behind Ernst Blofeld and we're now just waiting for the ground really. I've got rather too many three-year-olds rated in the high 70s who are still maidens - they've all been second and are very difficult to place in the current system. Ever since a novice system for three-year-olds came in it's been very difficult to place those who are in the 75-80 range. Normally you'd have won a maiden by then and been competitive in a handicap, but now they're novices you're taking on basically Group horses. If you come second or third that puts you up too high in the handicap and you're in the middle of nowhere. 29-05-25"
The editorial second choice is highest-rated by some margin (6lbs above average) but comes with a major reservation: this three-year-old has never actually raced on normal ground before, so today is uncharted territory. Recent form is poor (11th, 10th, 7th across the last three) and the horse has won just once from nine races.

More experienced than most with 36 races under its belt and a 25% win rate on standard ground (1 from 4), but Eminency's last three runs tell a discouraging story — 7th, 4th, 5th — and the horse hasn't won in over a year. It's the kind of reliable plodder that occasionally threatens but rarely delivers at this level.
One of the more successful in the field (4 career wins)
Carries the lowest weight in the field and has finished 2nd in three consecutive races (beaten margins of 0.3L, 0.8L, and 5.0L), but this filly has yet to break through for a win despite six races and four top-three finishes — the law of averages suggests a victory is due, but form alone doesn't guarantee it will come today.

The most experienced runner with 45 races, but also the lowest-rated in the field (7lbs below average) and showing serious form decline — 13th and 21st at York in the last month after a respectable 2nd here 185 days ago. This old campaigner is being asked to spark at the worst possible time.

The only horse in the field to have won at this track and distance, and incredibly, just 22 days ago — that's the freshest relevant form on offer. Loves standard and standard-to-slow ground (40% and 25% win rates respectively), but crucially, King Of Fury has never won on good or soft ground, which limits tactical flexibility.

A three-year-old with a solid 20% win rate from 10 races and an excellent record at this trip (1 from 3), but recent form collapsed spectacularly with an 11th-place finish at Newbury just 18 days ago by a massive 21.5 lengths. That kind of exit suggests something is amiss.

A 381-day absence is the longest layoff in the entire field — this horse simply hasn't raced seriously for over a year, making it effectively unknown in current form. When it did return 44 days ago at York, it finished 18th, suggesting the yard is still searching for the right opportunity.
How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
