The horse won for the first time at Newbury back in July 2023, and Hills was effusive afterwards, calling Cogitate beautiful looking with the size and scope for a big future. That enthusiasm hasn't dimmed. Speaking more recently, Hills made clear that fast, dry ground is the key that unlocks this horse — conditions matter enormously, and the team are patient enough to wait for them. A stiff mile is apparently the ideal trip, and with a rating of 93, they've decided to save him for a specific target rather than run him into the ground beforehand. The Britannia at Royal Ascot has been mentioned as the prize they're pointing toward — one of the top races in Britain, run over a mile, on what is usually fast ground in June. That would make sense.

What gives the profile a slight edge of tension is Cogitate's recent record at the top level. In seven races at Class 2 — the grade just below the very best — the horse has yet to win, a run of 0 from 7 that shows how fine the margins are at this level. The last win came at Salisbury in May 2025, nearly a year ago now, and the most recent six results (a seventh, two seconds, a fourth, and two more placings) paint the picture of a horse that competes consistently without quite getting its nose in front. Seconds and placings are nice, but they don't win races.

Hollie Doyle, one of the most high-profile jockeys in Britain, has ridden Cogitate five times and won once — that's a 20% win rate together, which is actually better than the horse's overall record of roughly 1 win in every 10 races. Hills noted that the horse wasn't fully wound up for his most recent run, when he bumped into a rival called Night Raider at Southwell and still ran respectably. With a couple of solid pieces of work since then and the right ground ahead, Cogitate's team are quietly confident the best is still to come.
