Sits in the lowest-numbered draw and while the data shows that's no advantage at this course, the form coming in is solid — placed in three of his last four races. He wins roughly 1 in every 8 races overall and has a good record on dry ground specifically, with wins at 25% on that surface. Three career wins from 23 races gives him more experience of winning than several rivals here.

The editorial verdict is firmly behind this horse and it's easy to see why — he is the course specialist of the field with five wins at Ayr from 30 races here, a record no other runner gets close to matching. He raced just six days ago at Musselburgh, which the editorial team frames as a confidence-building warm-up, and dry ground is where he does his best work with two wins from six attempts on this surface. At 11 years old he's by far the most experienced horse in a field that averages 27 races — he simply knows this course better than anyone.

"He's been a super horse. When I bought him at the sales I was told I could spend £8k, maybe £10k at a push, and I rang the boys up and said, “I'm going to have to go to full budget for this.” The boys said, “Mike, that's a lot of money for a horse who hasn't run”, and I said “yes, but he's a cracking horse.” He was actually bought with an entry for the Derby. He's now won eight races for us and £121k in prize-money, so it was money well spent. The boys have turned down fairly good offers for him because they wanted to keep racing and having fun with him, which is commendable. He was a good third on his seasonal reappearance at Ayr behind Fiver Friday. He benefited from a racecourse gallop on the track after the Scottish National meeting, which is a fantastic thing and I think that's one of the reasons the Irish horses do so well. 16-05-24"
The market has made this the favourite despite the fact it has never won a race in 17 attempts — and crucially, it has never raced on dry ground like today's conditions. It ran a solid second just 11 days ago at Cork, which explains the support, but stepping into unknown territory on today's surface is a real concern for the jolly.
Hasn't raced for nearly seven months and comes into this off three poor efforts before the break, beaten at least five lengths in each of them. The trainer Jim Goldie has been in fine form lately with three winners in the past two weeks, which is the main reason to look twice. However, her record on dry ground reads zero wins from three attempts, which is a problem here.

No wins from nine races, but three consecutive runner-up finishes before his seven-month absence suggests a horse that keeps getting close without finding that extra gear. Like Land Of The Giants, he has never raced on dry ground, so today's conditions are a completely unknown quantity. He's also had six attempts at Ayr without winning, which doesn't help his case at the track he returns to.

The standout stat here is that Dingwall is the only horse in the field to have won at this exact distance — and he's done it more than once. He's also been remarkably consistent lately, finishing second in four races on the bounce, so the form heading into this is rock solid. The low draw helps at this course and his jockey-trainer combination has yet to click, but the horse itself arrives in fine nick.

Carries one of the higher ratings in this field and showed decent consistency before a six-month break, finishing in the top three in two of his last three races. The big question is whether he can reproduce that form first time back, especially from draw 10 where the stats at this course are against him. One win from 18 races tells you he's more of a nearly horse than a winner.

Returning from a six-month absence having last raced at this very track, where she finished a tame ninth — not the most encouraging Ayr form to bring into the day. Her jockey Andrew Mullen has ridden two winners in the last fortnight which is the best recent form of any rider in this race. The dry ground suits based on her record, but the long break makes her hard to trust.

The best career win rate in the entire field — winning roughly 1 in every 6 races — and yet she arrives here off the back of three ninth-place finishes in a row, which tells you how far she's fallen from her best. The crucial issue is that all five of her career wins have come on good or soft ground, and she has just one win from 13 races on artificial or standard surfaces, making today's dry turf ideal in theory. The form needs to return sharply, and at 29/1, most punters aren't banking on it.
The lowest-rated horse in the field by some distance — 11 pounds below average — and the only runner yet to win or place more than once in 23 career races. He's never raced on dry ground, which adds uncertainty, and the high draw is the worst position to be in according to the course stats. There's very little here to suggest he can reverse those trends today.

Two course wins at Ayr make her one of only a handful of proven winners at this track in the field, which is not nothing. But those wins came on wet ground, and today's dry conditions are a very different story — she has zero wins from five attempts on this surface. Her last three runs before a seven-month break were all double-figure finishes, so the form is hard to get excited about.

A ten-year-old returning from a six-month break on the back of three poor runs, beaten more than eight lengths on each occasion. He does have a decent record on today's dry ground — two wins from 22 races on that surface — and his best distances suit this trip, but the odds of 26/1 reflect just how far off the boil he looks right now. Hard to make a case for him.

How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
