TrackLab Insight
The standout horse in the field by a clear margin — rated 9lbs clear of the next best rival, which in racing terms is a very wide gap. Five wins from just eight races is a remarkable record for a six-year-old, and the editorial verdict points to an unlucky near-miss at Cheltenham last time as evidence this horse is ready to go one better. If it runs to its rating, the rest are racing for second place.

Trainer Quotes

"How many horses have gone to the Arkle off one run? Very few, I'd say, so maybe the statistics aren't as bad as we think. However, we are up against it with the experience. He worked very well the other day. I put him in against three good horses and they went two miles over fences at racing speed. That was our objective, I wanted to do what a race at Leopardstown would do and I wanted to bring him to a race meeting on a raceday, just to try and replicate it, but I didn't want the hardship that he might get in the Irish Arkle. I didn't want a hard race, but I wanted a good, hard bit of work. He did it well and the further and faster he jumped, the better he jumped. 12-02-26"

The freshest horse in the field having raced just 19 days ago at Aintree, where it finished second in a top-level race — and crucially, it has already won over this course and distance at Punchestown. The concern is a poor record on soft ground, with no wins in three attempts on it, and today's conditions are exactly that. Trained by the same yard as the favourite, which raises the question of who the team's real hope is.

At nine years old, Irish Panther is the most experienced horse in the field and the one with the best record on wet, muddy ground — though that record reads just one win from seven attempts on it, so it's not exactly a superpower. A distant sixth at Cheltenham last time out is hard to ignore, and at odds of 7.0 it looks like the market has taken note. Honest and consistent, but faces a stiff task against the top-rated horse in the field.

The one genuinely intriguing angle here is that Pure Steel has already won over this exact course and distance at Punchestown — something only one other runner can claim. The problem is it has never raced on wet or muddy ground before, and today's conditions are soft, so there's a real unknown at the heart of its chances. It's also been off the track for 109 days — the longest absence in the field — and drifting in the betting is rarely a good sign.

The best record over this two-mile trip in the field — two wins from three races at the distance — and back-to-back wins heading into this make Jacob's Ladder a serious runner on paper. That said, the odds of 26.0 tell you the market doesn't fancy its chances against the favourite, and this is a significant step up in class. Winning nearly half its races across a career is a genuinely impressive statistic, but this is the toughest test yet.

How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
