Timurshah is in the form of his life with three consecutive wins including a Galway victory just six days ago, posting a 50% win rate over his last six races. He's unbeatable on good ground (3 from 6) and clearly thrives at this distance, but the concern is racing again after just six days—even hot horses can hit a wall. This is the standout form profile in the field, but freshness is a legitimate question mark.

TrackLab Insight
Teed Up is a Galway specialist with an extraordinary record of 4 wins from 11 starts there (36%), and this is a horse that knows exactly how to win over this course and distance. However, normal ground is the critical issue—he's 0 from 5 on good ground and hasn't won at this track in softer conditions either, so this surface presents a genuine vulnerability. Running again after just 2 days also matters against the elite level here.

Wahraan was second at Galway just 4 days ago, beaten by only 0.3 lengths, and is running again immediately after—he's sharp and clearly fit. He's won on good ground before (1 from 6) and the distance suits him, but his overall record is modest (3 from 29) and he's only 5.2 odds despite modest career form. The tight turnaround and recent close call could cut both ways.

Trainer Quotes

"He's very talented and an absolute rogue. He runs the most extraordinary races. At Southwell last week he was probably 30 lengths behind the last horse. He decided to lock on and ended up finishing third having run the most inefficient and energy-consuming race of all time. He'll drop right at some stage and I've just got to unlock his brain. If we can do that there's a good race in him off 84. 'd like to keep him on next year as we might just have a reset over the winter. I could see him charging through the handicap because he's got a lot of talent. 11-09-24"

Penzance is the most experienced horse in the field (39 races) and brings 3 straight second-place finishes from English tracks—showing consistent form and gate-to-wire consistency at shorter trips. However, he's never won on good ground (0 from 10), has never raced in Irish conditions this season, and his 4 career wins came mostly at shorter distances. This is a significant step up in class and trip.

"He's been one of our big success stories over the last 12 months. We bought him when he was rated 74 and he won four of his first five starts for us and went up to a career-high mark of 100 by the end of the all-weather season. It took him a while to get into gear on the turf but he ran his best race yet on the grass at Doncaster this month. That showed us he can compete in good races on the turf as well. He's going to go for the Cambridgeshire on Saturday. He's in good form and hasn't had a busy summer and it's brilliant prize-money and a fantastic race to have a runner in. It's a bit of a free hit. Away from that, he'll be working back from the Easter Classic, in which he was second last season. We'll be looking at some of the better all-weather prizes that will get him qualified for finals day. Hopefully he can go one better this time. 26-09-24"

Playtime is quietly progressive with 2 wins and 9 places from 18 races—he's found the top three in roughly half his starts and placed in 2 of his last 3 runs. His trainer Gordon Elliott's record with jockey Josh Williamson is excellent (21 wins from 177 races together), and he's ideally suited to the 1m6f-2m range. At 11.5 with improving form, this horse represents genuine value against more fancied rivals.

Castleheath won at Galway and has one course victory to his name, but his recent form is alarming: 12th at Limerick 216 days ago after finishing 4th and 5th prior. He hasn't run in three months and doesn't cope with standard ground (0 from 3), making this comeback against a 18-runner field a tough ask despite 4 wins from 18 career races.

Coolboy Christy is winless from 12 career races with just one place finish, and his recent form (5-4-8-4-5-4) shows consistent mid-field finishes but no punch. He raced just 10 days ago and hasn't broken through despite multiple tries—this is a horse that simply hasn't shown enough yet in a competitive handicap field.

Dream Shaper just broke through at Kilbeggan 9 days ago for his first win after 27 failed attempts, which is heartening form. However, he's 0 from 7 at Galway despite 7 career visits, suggesting the track hasn't suited him historically, and normal ground isn't ideal (no wins on good or good-to-yielding). He's the lowest-rated horse in the field at 91, and the breakthrough victory hasn't changed that reality.

Bannow Blaze fell at Roscommon 55 days ago and unseated at Tramore before that—recent runs have been messy rather than competitive. His career record is poor (1 from 13), and while he's suited by yielding ground, today's normal conditions don't favour him. At 21.0, the odds don't compensate for the recent mishaps and thin win record.

Mo Ghille Mar is racing for the second time in two days after finishing 13th at Galway yesterday, which is alarming form and suggests she's not at her peak. Her career record is modest (5 from 37) and she struggles on several ground types despite a decent 67% record on good-to-yielding. At 30.0 and clearly out of form, she looks vulnerable.

Party President ran at Galway 5 days ago but the result is missing from the data, making it hard to assess current form with confidence. He's got 2 wins from 16 races and a strong record on good-to-yielding ground (67%), but today's normal conditions aren't ideal and recent form appears patchy. The quick turnaround is concerning.

Cloonainra was mentioned in the editorial as a serious threat, but recent form tells a different story: 10-5-4-8-9-5 across her last six runs with no wins in recent memory. She's 3 from 16 lifetime but has gone dry, and the market has moved against her (drifted from 26.0 to 34.0). At 7 years old with declining form, this looks a stretch too far.

Space Warrior carries the lowest weight (140lbs) but has only 1 win from 23 races—a breakthrough at Fairyhouse now 21 months old with no success since. Recent form shows 9-3-9-6, mixing occasional promise with plenty of disappointment, and he hasn't won on standard ground in his limited record. At 23.0 odds with poor form trending, he looks overmatched.

Barrys Spirit has been away for 246 days—the longest absence in the field—and returns to a horse that has won 1 from 4 races overall. He's never raced on normal ground, adding a layer of uncertainty to whether his Downpatrick form will translate here. With so little data and such a long break, he remains an unknown quantity at best.

Tassarolo is a honest workhorse with 23 races under his belt and a pattern of regular placing (9 places from 23 starts), but he's a genuine problem horse on today's ground—zero wins from 5 starts on standard ground and zero from 7 on good ground. Despite showing some ability on good-to-yielding, he's drifted to 34.0 and this race looks made against him.

Imperial Miss is winless from 18 races and hasn't run in 231 days, making her a genuine uncertainty. She showed some promise with a second place at Galway 299 days ago, but that form is stale and her overall record (0 wins, 2 places) suggests she operates below the standard needed here. The long absence and winless record are serious concerns.

My Trump Card is a frustratingly talented horse that hasn't found the winner's circle in six races, with recent form reading 10-5-8-7-8-7—lots of mid-field finishes but no breakthroughs. He's never raced on normal ground (today's conditions), which adds real uncertainty to what he'll deliver. At 41.0 odds in a competitive field, the market has written him off, and the form suggests there's a reason why.

Torque De Lune is relatively inexperienced (6 career races) with zero wins and just one place finish—she unseated at Killarney 16 days ago after finishing 3rd and 4th in prior runs. At 60.0 odds and with just 1 top-three finish from 6 attempts, this is clearly a horse still learning the game in an elite handicap field.

How do odds work? The first number is what you win, the second is what you bet. So 5/2 means you win £5 for every £2. 4/1 means you win £4 for every £1. The bigger the first number, the less likely bookmakers think the horse will win — but the more you'd win if it does.
