The numbers are stark. Last year showed a glimmer of promise, with a win rate of roughly 1 in every 20 races — modest, but at least something to build on. This season, that has slipped to zero from 27 attempts, which is a difficult run by any measure. Training horses is notoriously hard, especially in the early years, and plenty of respected yards took time to find their feet. But the drought is long enough now that something clearly needs to change.

The most striking detail is the partnership with Dream Shaper, a horse Madden has sent out 25 times without once reaching the winner's enclosure. Twenty-five races together is a substantial shared history, and the fact that it has produced nothing is both remarkable and telling. At some point, persistence becomes the story in itself — and whatever the pair are searching for, they haven't found it yet.
