What is striking is how long ago that sole victory now feels. Twenty-one months have passed since the win at Fairyhouse, and Space Warrior has raced six times since without getting back into the winners' circle. The recent form reads poorly: a ninth place, another ninth, a third, a ninth again, a sixth, and a non-completion. It paints a picture of a horse that has largely found life at this level too much.
The horse performs best over the longer distances — races of two miles or more — where it has won 1 of its 13 starts, or roughly 8 per cent. That is still not a strong win rate, but it does hint that Space Warrior may have found its niche in staying races rather than shorter tests of speed. Danny Mullins, the most frequent rider, has steered the horse in 10 races and recorded one win, a 10 per cent return that is marginally better than Space Warrior's overall record. With Mullins and trainer Mullins operating out of the same successful yard, there is at least continuity in the partnership. The yard has sent out just 2 winners all season, however, which underlines how selective they must be. Space Warrior remains active and raced just a day ago, so there may yet be another opportunity to add to that tally.
