The recent form figures of 13-10-8-5-9-4 tell an interesting story, though. Read from right to left — oldest to most recent — there is at least a suggestion of progress. That fourth-place finish is the closest Straight Back Up has come to a podium position, and the general drift toward lower finishing positions hints that something may finally be clicking. It is a thin thread to cling to, but it is there.
The horse competes at Class 6, which is the entry level of British racing — the races where horses with modest ability or limited experience find their feet. Winning zero from six at that level is a tough fact to dress up. These are the easiest opportunities available, and Straight Back Up has not yet been able to convert. What the fourth-place finish does suggest is that the horse is at least competitive enough to be in the mix at this level, even if the winner's enclosure remains out of reach for now.
Having raced just yesterday, Straight Back Up is very much an active and ongoing story. Twelve races is a reasonable sample size — enough to draw some conclusions — but not so many that hope is entirely extinguished. Horses do sometimes take time to develop, and that recent uptick in form is at least a conversation starter. Whether it translates into a first win is the question the trainer will be trying to answer.
