At six years old, Regal Glory spends most of its time competing at the lowest level of British racing — Class 6, which is essentially the entry-level tier where horses who struggle to win elsewhere come to find their best chance. And yet even here, the record reads one win from 29 races at that level, a win rate of just 3%. To put that in perspective, a coin landing heads gives you far better odds. The recent run of form — finishing 11th, 4th, 2nd, 7th, 3rd, and 9th across the last six races — shows a horse that occasionally threatens without delivering, which is perhaps the most frustrating kind.

The partnership with jockey Luke Morris has produced that single career win, coming from 10 races together, which works out to wins in 1 in every 10 rides. That's not a bad ratio by this horse's standards — it's actually its best relationship with any rider. Roger Fell's yard up in Nawton, North Yorkshire, has been in decent form this season with 23 winners sent out, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses to win. The challenge is finding the right conditions for Regal Glory to do the same.

The sweet spot in terms of distance appears to be seven furlongs to a mile, where the one career win sits among 14 attempts at those trips — a win rate of 7%, which is considerably better than the overall picture. If there's a puzzle worth solving with this horse, the distance is probably part of the answer. Raced just yesterday and still active, Regal Glory clearly has plenty of enthusiasm for showing up. Whether the winner's enclosure will see it again is the question everyone connected to the yard would love to answer — but after 41 months of waiting, nobody's rushing to make predictions.
