The horse's wins tell you most of what you need to know. The first came at Southwell in February 2024; the second came nine months later at Newcastle in October that year. Since that Newcastle victory 22 months ago, Kitaab has not won again, despite racing regularly. Looking at recent form, there is little to suggest a turnaround is coming—the last six races have yielded one fourth place and the rest well down the field, with a pair of eleventh-place finishes among them.
Kitaab performs noticeably better on normal ground, winning 2 of 18 races (11%) when conditions are standard, compared to its overall record. The horse also seems to prefer shorter distances in the 5-furlong to 6½-furlong range, winning 2 of 21 races there (10%). Philip Kirby's yard at East Appleton, North Yorkshire, has sent out 36 winners this season, but Kitaab remains stubbornly difficult to get into the winner's circle. Regular jockey Cam Hardie has partnered the horse nine times without a win, which suggests the problem lies with the horse itself rather than any particular rider. At this stage of its career, Kitaab is what it is: a horse that will have the occasional place but whose winning days appear firmly behind it.
