Those wins have all come on fast, dry ground and over a distance of around a mile to a mile and a quarter — and when both conditions line up at Brighton, Fighting Poet becomes a genuinely different horse. Most of Fighting Poet's racing happens at Class 6, the entry level of British racing, which is where the horse has always been most competitive. A career spent largely at that level, with £74,000 in prize money, tells you this is a horse operating near the bottom of the professional game — but doing so consistently and, at its favourite track, with something approaching genuine authority.

The recent form makes interesting reading: the last six races read 4-9-9-4-6-1, meaning two bad runs in the middle, but a win most recently and another decent effort before that. The yard, run by Richard Phillips in Adlestrop, Gloucestershire, has sent out 3 winners this season, so the operation is ticking along. Regular jockey Robert Havlin has yet to get a win from 5 rides together, though the most recent Brighton victory may have changed the dynamic between them.

Fighting Poet raced just one day ago and is clearly in active training. With a win at Brighton as recently as August 2025, the team will know exactly what conditions they are waiting for — a dry summer day on the Sussex coast, and this horse becomes worth watching.
