Copper Knight

Pontefract is Copper Knight's kingdom. He's won two of his three races there—a win rate of roughly two in three, far better than his career average. When slightly soft or wet ground comes up, he thrives: he's won four of his 14 races on softer going, and three of nine on genuinely wet ground. That's around a quarter to a third of his races, when he'd normally win one in seven. His trainer, Tim Easterby, based in North Yorkshire, has described him as a horse who "looks great and you'd never know he was ten years old"—the kind of remark that speaks to a horse who has aged well and remains sound enough to justify running. Sean Kirrane, his most frequent partner, has ridden him to four wins from 15 races, a much stronger win rate of roughly one in four when they team up together.

What emerges from Copper Knight's form over the past six races is a horse who is unpredictable but not finished. His most recent outing came just a day ago, suggesting the Easterby yard still sees value in running him. Those who handle him speak of him fondly—describing him as "a super old boy", "a real yard superstar", and "a legend"—the language used by people who have looked after a horse through many seasons and many races. For a horse in his twilight years, consistency, the ability to win at the top level occasionally, and a clear preference for certain tracks and ground conditions add up to a respectable racing life.
