That sole placed finish came in its most recent outing just a day ago, when it managed second, offering at least a glimmer of encouragement. But the horse is struggling for consistency, and the fact that it hasn't crossed the line first in its last six races underlines how hard it finds winning.

Zous Juice is trained by Michael and David Easterby at Sheriff Hutton in North Yorkshire, a yard that has sent out 55 winners this season and clearly knows how to train winners—just perhaps not this particular horse. For a five-year-old competing at the lowest levels of the sport with no wins on the board, the path forward will require a significant improvement in form or a change of tack.
