Zoulu Chief

The horse won convincingly at York in August 2023, a significant achievement, and also claimed victory at Newbury earlier that year. But a glance at recent form tells a sobering story. Over the last six races, Zoulu Chief has finished eighth, ninth, ninth again, tenth, third, and first. That last win came at Wolverhampton on 3 November 2025 — ten months ago. Since then, nothing. For a horse that was winning at top tracks and winning regularly, the slide into a sequence of out-of-the-frame runs and then a 10-month gap between victories is striking. It raises questions about whether Zoulu Chief has lost form, been troubled by injury or other issues, or simply regressed as a racer. Trainer Heather Main's Kingston Lisle yard has been productive this season with 17 winners, but Zoulu Chief is not among the success stories at this moment.

The horse was still active as recently as yesterday, which means the the yard are persisting with it. That suggests there is still something to work with, or at least hope that the spark can return. But for a horse capable of winning at York, the current pattern of eighth-place and ninth-place finishes represents a sharp fall from grace. Zoulu Chief is a decent horse that once competed with the best — now it is a horse hunting for its next opportunity and trying to recapture form that seems to have slipped away.
