Wee Mary

The recent form reads 4-4-3-3-7-7, which tells an interesting story in two halves. Those back-to-back thirds and fourths show a horse knocking on the door, finishing close enough to matter. The two sevenths before that are less encouraging, but the overall picture of the last six races is one of gradual improvement rather than decline — which is something. She raced just yesterday, so the legs are still warm.

Most of Wee Mary's racing has come at Class 6, the entry level of British racing, and even there the record reads 1 win from 16 races at that level — a 6% win rate, or roughly 1 in 16. That is modest by any measure, but it is also simply the reality of where this horse is competitive. Jim Goldie, who trains her out of Uplawmoor in Lanarkshire, is no small-time operator — his yard has sent out 88 winners this season alone, which is a serious training operation. Goldie clearly knows how to get horses to win races. The question with Wee Mary is finding the right one.

Regular jockey Kaiya Fraser has ridden her five times without winning, though that is as much a reflection of the horse's overall record as anything else. When you win 1 in 24, the problem rarely lies with the person in the saddle. What Wee Mary offers is consistency of effort and a yard behind her that clearly believes there is another winning day somewhere on the horizon. Newcastle gave her one — and at some point, the right race on the right day might just give her another.
