Both wins came in the summer of 2025. The first was at Bangor-on-Dee in July, where by his trainer's own account he "bolted up" — in other words, won very easily. The second, at Stratford-on-Avon in August, was arguably even more telling. Horses who win a race are typically given a penalty — extra weight — to carry next time out, to make things fairer for their rivals. Way Maker carried that penalty and won anyway. His trainer Mickey Bowen, who operates out of Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire and has sent out 51 winners already this season, was candid about the fact that the horse wasn't even fully right on the day. Winning when you are not at your best, with extra weight on your back, is the kind of thing that makes a trainer sit up and take notice.
After that, the team set their sights on a £100,000 race at Newbury — one of the biggest prizes available at that level. Way Maker ran but couldn't deliver on the day, finishing third. Bowen was honest about the disappointment, but his view is that the horse's future remains bright. It is worth noting that simply being aimed at a race of that size tells you something: you don't pitch up at a £100,000 event unless you genuinely believe your horse belongs there.
Way Maker raced just one day ago, so there is clearly plenty of season left in him. With a trainer in form, two wins already banked from four races, and the experience of a big-money race under his belt, he is a horse that anyone watching this summer should keep a close eye on.
