What makes Watch The Weather worth watching, though, is what happens when the ground softens. On slightly wet or muddy conditions, the horse becomes a different proposition entirely — it wins 2 races from every 7 attempts on such ground (29%), which is more than double its overall rate. Even more striking is what happens at Wexford, where the horse has found the track to its liking, winning 2 of 6 races there. The trainer R P Cody, based in Dunnamaggin in County Kilkenny, clearly sees something in this old campaigner: it is still being run regularly, and the yard itself has had a productive season.
The real story, though, belongs to Rachael Blackmore, the champion jockey who has ridden Watch The Weather nine times and won three of those races — a 33% win rate that is nearly triple the horse's overall record. That kind of partnership does not happen by accident. Blackmore has the skill to get the best from an aging horse on the right ground at the right track, and her presence in the saddle is genuinely worth noting. With last winning at Punchestown back in November 2024, Watch The Weather is overdue, but on a soft day at Wexford with Blackmore aboard, it could yet remind people why this old horse keeps showing up.
