The most striking number in Thurso's record is what happens on fast, dry ground: 2 wins from just 3 races, a 67% win rate that is frankly extraordinary. Most horses find a surface they tolerate; Thurso seems to find one it genuinely thrives on. Pair that with a preference for the shorter distances — 5 to 6½ furlongs — and 3 wins from 10 races at that trip (30%, nearly 1 in 3) and you have a horse with a very clear comfort zone. Get those conditions right and it becomes dangerous.

Thurso opened its account at Haydock Park in May 2025, but the more recent landmark is a win at Bath just this week — a result fresh enough that the yard at Upper Lambourn is presumably still smiling. That yard is Richard Hughes's operation, and it has been in serious form, sending out 60 winners already this season. A trainer running at that kind of volume tends to know exactly where to place a horse to give it its best chance, and Thurso fits neatly into the Class 5 bracket — the level below the big prizes but where plenty of racing actually gets decided. Three wins from 11 races at that level (27%, better than 1 in 4) suggests this is a horse that belongs there and knows how to win there.

The partnership with jockey Finley Marsh is worth noting too. Together they have won 3 of their 16 races (19%, close to 1 in 5), and three of Thurso's four career wins have come with Marsh in the saddle. That kind of continuity matters — a jockey who knows a horse's quirks and tendencies is often the difference between a place and a win. Right now, with a win this week and racing yesterday, Thurso is very much in the middle of a purple patch, and on dry ground over a short trip, it is worth keeping an eye on.
