This Guy

The recent form makes for interesting reading. His last six races show a sequence of 8, two blanks, 5, 3, and 2 — read from most recent backwards, that tells the story of a horse who was struggling for form, then found his feet and got dangerously close to winning. A second-place finish is the cruellest result in racing: all the effort, none of the reward. The two dashes in that sequence suggest he missed those runs through a break, which may well have done him some good given what followed.

At Class 5, the level where he has raced three times, he is yet to win — but Class 5 in Ireland is competitive, and the fact that he is placing regularly suggests he belongs at this level rather than being out of his depth. He is not a horse drifting down through the grades looking for somewhere easy to hide. He is a horse who keeps knocking on the door.

He is trained by Daniel James Murphy at the Curragh in Co Kildare, one of the most important training centres in Ireland. Murphy's yard has sent out 19 winners already this season, which shows this is an active, functioning operation with horses in form. That matters — a horse trained somewhere with winners going in is more likely to be fit, well-prepared, and pointed at the right races. This Guy raced just one day ago, so he is very much in the thick of his campaign right now.

The honest summary: This Guy has never won, but he is not a no-hoper. He is a young horse in a productive yard who has been competitive enough to place in more than half his races. At three, he still has time to develop, and if that recent improvement in form — from mid-pack to nearly winning — is a sign of things to come, the win might not be far away.
