The Pug

Trained by Olly Murphy's successful Wilmcote yard in Warwickshire, The Pug competes primarily in Class 6 races — the lower tiers of British racing — where it has won four of 34 attempts. It made its breakthrough on 28 January 2023 at Lingfield Park, and has not won since 22 August 2025, a drought of thirteen months. Remarkably, despite racing just yesterday, it has now gone six consecutive races without a win, which suggests it may be running below its best form. Rob Hornby, its most frequent partner in the saddle, has steered it to one victory from nine rides together. The partnership works at an 11% clip — fractionally better than The Pug's overall rate — but neither horse nor jockey has found the winner's circle together in a while. For a veteran plodder at this level, The Pug remains a legitimate winning chance when conditions align: get it back to a mile-and-a-quarter on a day when the track is right and Southwell appears on the card, and there is a decent chance it will do its talking.
