The Lakes

Trained by Simon Whitaker out of Scarcroft in West Yorkshire, The Lakes competes at Class 5 — the bread-and-butter level of British racing, where horses are expected to be competitive without being stars. Whitaker's yard has sent out three winners this season, so the operation is capable of getting horses into the winner's enclosure. The Lakes, though, has been beaten in all three of its races at this level, and has yet to give the team much to work with.

What makes the record slightly unusual is that a horse racing at Class 5 without a win after six attempts is starting to run out of easy explanations. It raced just yesterday, so the yard are clearly persisting — and persistence sometimes pays off. But right now, The Lakes is a horse whose profile is defined almost entirely by what hasn't happened yet.
