It sounds modest until you consider that most horses at this level win a fraction of that. He is not just turning up; he is genuinely competing. Jardine's yard at Carrutherstown has been in fine form this season, sending out 57 winners, and The Gay Blade is very much part of that story.

Hamilton Park is where he seems to come alive. Two wins from 11 races there does not sound dramatic, but Jardine has been open about the fact that a recent dead-heat at the track could, in his view, have been awarded outright to The Gay Blade after he was carried off his line. There is clearly a fondness for the place — a tight, turning track in Scotland that suits a horse who battles and grinds rather than one that dazzles in the straight. His first career win came at Hamilton in September 2022, and the course has remained something of a home from home.

Recent form tells the most compelling part of the story. Three wins from his last six races — and he raced just yesterday. For a horse of 66 career starts, that kind of late-career purple patch is striking. His most regular partner Andrew Mullen has been in the saddle for 37 of those races together and won 5 of them, a win rate of roughly 1 in 7. Jardine notes that wet or muddy ground brings out the best in him on turf, which is useful information heading into the autumn months. The Gay Blade is not a horse that will trouble the big prizes, but he is exactly the kind of horse that racing runs on — consistent, durable, and genuinely fun to follow.
