One fourth-place finish is not a worry when everything else points to a horse running with purpose.

Tapley typically races at Class 3 level — one step down from the very top tier, where the fields are competitive and nothing comes easy. Winning just 1 of 14 races (7%) at that level, or roughly one in every fourteen tries, tells you this is a horse that earns its wins honestly. When it does get to the front, it has worked for it. Worth noting as a course specialist at Plumpton, where it has won 2 of its 6 races — one in every three starts there — which is a significantly better return than elsewhere and worth remembering whenever Plumpton comes up on the schedule.

Both are well-acquainted with how the other operates at this point. Trainer Suzy Smith runs a yard in Angmering in West Sussex, and while it has been a modest season for the stable in terms of winners, Tapley's win at Stratford just weeks ago shows the horse is carrying the yard's flag with some distinction. First past the post at Fontwell Park back in October 2022, still winning in March 2026, and raced just yesterday — Tapley is a durable, consistent performer who clearly loves the game.
