Sweet Nightingale

What makes the recent form genuinely interesting is the uptick in quality. Her last six runs read 5-3-3-1-3, and that sole victory — at Exeter on 22 March 2026, just seven weeks ago — was her first win since Newton Abbot back in May 2022. Nearly four years between wins is a long wait, and the fact that she has stayed competitive throughout that stretch rather than fading away says something real about her. She is not a horse that has been kept in cotton wool; she raced just yesterday, which means she is in the middle of an active campaign right now.

The ground matters enormously with Sweet Nightingale. On normal conditions she has won 2 times from 14 races — a 14% win rate, or roughly 1 in 7. That might not sound extraordinary until you consider that her overall record outside of those conditions is zero wins from eleven races. In other words, she has never won on anything other than standard ground. That is exactly the kind of detail a knowledgeable friend would whisper to you before you went to the window.

There is one puzzle in her record, though. She has raced ten times at Class 4 level — one step below the top tiers, essentially mid-table racing — and has not won once. Both her victories have come elsewhere, which suggests she actually performs better when the races are framed slightly differently. Whether that is about the fields she meets or simply coincidence is hard to say, but it is worth noting.

Trainer Polly Gundry operates out of Ottery St Mary in Devon, not far from Exeter, which is perhaps why Sweet Nightingale ran so well there in March. The yard has sent out four winners already this season, showing Gundry has her string in good form. A nine-year-old horse still racing week in, week out under a trainer clearly getting results — there is something quietly admirable about that.
