The horse typically competes at Class 5, which is the entry-level tier of British racing — essentially the races designed for horses who struggle to beat much. Even there, it has drawn a blank in all seven attempts. Its most regular partner has been jockey Ben Poste, who has ridden it five times without a win. That is not necessarily a knock on either horse or rider — sometimes a partnership just hasn't clicked — but the numbers don't give you much to work with.
What makes the situation slightly more intriguing is the trainer. Tony Carroll's yard in Cropthorne, Worcestershire, has sent out 134 winners this season, which is a genuinely impressive tally and marks Carroll out as someone who knows how to get horses winning. When a trainer is firing in winners at that rate, it makes you wonder whether Strong As Steel simply needs more time, or perhaps a different trip, or a specific set of conditions to finally find its best. Good yards don't usually give up on horses easily.
Strong As Steel hasn't raced in roughly three months, which is a meaningful gap. Horses returning from a break can sometimes come back transformed — fresher, more settled, occasionally carrying a quiet bit of stable confidence that outsiders can't see. Whether that applies here is impossible to say, but the break at least opens the door to the idea that something different might be on the way. For now, though, this is a horse that has everything left to prove.
