The numbers capture the paradox neatly. At Class 2 level — some of the better races in Britain — he has raced 15 times and won just once, roughly 1 in every 15. Yet he has placed in enough of those to prove he belongs there. O'Meara knows exactly what he has on his hands. "He has a lot of ability but he's often the bridesmaid," the trainer said after Stressfree's last win, a Class 2 race at Haydock Park in May 2025. He has even sent the horse hurdling over the winter, not primarily to win races over jumps, but to toughen him up — to put a bit of steel into a horse who, in his trainer's words, "can be a bit soft." Jockey Henry Brooke, who rode him in one of those hurdle outings, was already talking about a bigger picture.

That Haydock win is worth dwelling on. It came almost exactly a year ago now, and his most recent six races have produced a seventh, a second, two fifths, a third, and a fourth — consistently involved, never quite over the line. Regular partner Daniel Tudhope has ridden him 12 times for 1 win together, a rate of roughly 1 in 12. O'Meara, a trainer who has sent out 107 winners already this season — a yard very much in form — has spoken about the Ebor at York as a possible target, one of the great staying races of the summer. Whether Stressfree can save his best for a day like that is the question. He has the talent. He just needs everything to fall right, and a willingness to use it when it matters most.
