His trainer Donald McCain, one of the most respected names in northern racing, has been patient with him. McCain's yard at Cholmondeley in Cheshire has sent out 55 winners this season alone, so they know what a good horse looks like — and McCain has been clear that Static is one he believes in. He described him as "a good, hardy horse who wears his heart on his sleeve," which in trainer-speak is high praise: it means the horse tries every time, regardless of conditions or competition. After a heavy fall that could have ended his career entirely, Static came back sound and kept racing. That kind of resilience matters.
The two wins tell an interesting story. The first came at Haydock Park in March 2026, a track McCain had always felt suited him. The second followed just a fortnight later at Bangor-on-Dee — two wins from six races in this recent spell, which is a completely different ratio to his overall career record. Something has clearly clicked. It is worth noting, though, that Static has raced five times at Class 1 level — the very top tier of British racing — and has yet to win there. So the question hanging over him is whether this improved form translates when the competition sharpens.
His most regular jockey is Charlie Maggs, and together they have a strong understanding. In eight races as a partnership they have won twice, a win rate of 25% — or 1 in every 4 races. That is a noticeably better ratio than Static's overall record suggests, which hints that the combination of horse and rider suits him. Static raced just yesterday and remains in active training, so more is clearly expected of him this season. McCain has previously talked about finding races where Static can settle and race at his own pace — a horse that "overraced" in the past is one that burns too much energy too early. Get that right, and the wins already on the board may just be the beginning.
