Those place finishes are actually the most interesting part of Starshot's story. Look at the last six races and you see a horse that is genuinely competitive: second, fourth, twelfth, third, fourth, eighth. That twelfth is the one blip in an otherwise solid recent run, and the second place finish suggests it came agonisingly close to adding to its solitary win. For a horse operating almost exclusively at Class 6 — the entry-level tier of British racing — being in the mix this regularly is the baseline expectation, but Starshot is meeting it more often than its win record alone would suggest.

At distances of seven furlongs to a mile, where it has raced 16 times, Starshot has that one win and converts at around 1 in every 16 races at those trips. That is actually its best distance range, and the Newcastle win came over this kind of ground, so the yard clearly have a sense of where the horse is most comfortable. Jockey Luke Morris has ridden it seven times without a win together, which is a notable drought — though given Starshot's overall record, that is less a reflection on Morris and more just the reality of partnering a horse that rarely finds the winning post.

Lawrence Mullaney's yard in Newark has sent out two winners this season, so this is a small, quietly operating stable rather than a powerhouse operation. The fact that Starshot raced just yesterday underlines that it is being kept busy and competitive. For a horse of its profile, that is the job — turn up, run honestly, grab a place when you can, and occasionally remind everyone why they kept the faith. Newcastle in July was one of those days. The question is whether there is another one coming.
