Secret Testimony

The recent form makes for interesting reading: before that Newcastle victory, the horse had been finishing seventh and tenth, so the win felt like a genuine step forward rather than a fluke. Since then, though, the runs have read 7, 9, and 8 — respectable enough to suggest the horse is trying, but not quite managing to replicate that November showing. That said, Secret Testimony raced just yesterday, so this is clearly a horse in active training and still being tested at various levels.

Zak Wheatley has been the regular partner, riding in five of the eight races and picking up that one win together. That's a 1-in-5 record when the pair combine — better than the overall career average — which suggests there's at least some understanding developing between horse and rider. When a jockey keeps coming back to the same horse, it usually means the yard believes there's more to come.

That yard is Declan Carroll's operation in Malton, North Yorkshire, which has sent out 22 winners this season. Carroll is a trainer who keeps his horses busy and knows how to place them where they have a chance, so the fact that Secret Testimony has only struck once in eight attempts isn't necessarily a red flag — it may simply mean the right race hasn't come along again yet. At three years old, there's time. The Newcastle win is a foundation to build on, and with a trainer posting that kind of season tally, the next opportunity won't be long in coming.
