The standout number is his record at Epsom Downs: two wins from just three races there. Epsom is famously awkward — a switchback, camber-heavy circuit that rewards horses who genuinely enjoy working with the terrain rather than against it. The same logic applies to Goodwood, where he landed his first career win in April 2022. These are not tracks where a horse can get away with being a flat-track bully. His trainer Kevin Frost noted during a stable tour that he really thrives on undulating tracks, and the results bear that out. A hat-trick of wins in the late summer of 2023, including twice at Epsom, confirmed that this horse had found his groove.
His preferred ground is normal conditions — he has won 3 of his 13 races on a standard surface, a win rate of 23%, which is sharp at his level. Early on there were questions about whether he needed softer underfoot, but those were answered convincingly. Former trainer Charles Hills noted after one run that despite being by the sire Mayson — a name associated with softer ground preferences — Saratoga Gold clearly prefers it quick. He has settled into Class 4 company, one tier below the top two levels, and his record there reads four wins from 15 races, just over 1 in every 4 — that is a solid return at a competitive level.
The partnership with jockey Kieran Shoemark is worth noting: two wins from six rides together, meaning they have clicked at a rate of roughly 1 in 3, which is a genuinely strong pairing by any measure. His last win came at Kempton Park in July 2023, which is now nearly three years ago, and his last six runs have all produced places without a win — a sequence of 2-3-2-3-2-5 that shows he is consistently competitive without quite getting back to the top. He raced just yesterday, so he is very much in active training. Kevin Frost's yard has sent out 25 winners already this season, which is a healthy operation. The form suggests Saratoga Gold is still showing up — just waiting for everything to fall right again.
