What makes the picture slightly more interesting is the recent direction of travel. Those finishing positions, reading back from the most recent race, go 5th, 4th, 8th, 7th, 11th — which means if you flip that around chronologically, the horse has actually been moving forward. It was last of those five in its earliest run, and it's now finishing in the top five. That's not nothing. It suggests a horse that is learning and improving, even if it hasn't yet translated that progress into a win or a place finish.
Regal Knight raced just yesterday, so it is very much an active campaign. The horse is trained by the partnership of Tony Coyle and Kaine Wood, based in Norton in North Yorkshire. The yard has sent out 12 winners already this season, which tells you there is genuine ability here — these are trainers who know how to get a horse to the finish line first. Regal Knight hasn't repaid that faith yet, but the improving trend at least suggests the team hasn't given up on finding the right opportunity.
