What makes Red Mirage's recent pattern worth watching is the drought. It has not won in 13 months, since a victory at Doncaster in July 2025, and the last six races tell a story of decline: second place, then fourth, eighth, sixth, sixth again, and third most recently. That third-place finish came just yesterday, so the horse is still actively racing, still being given chances to break back into the winner's circle. But here is the puzzle: when Red Mirage races at Class 4 level — the bread and butter of its career — it has won nothing from 12 attempts. It is in those routine races that the horse seems to lose its way.

Trainer John and Sean Quinn, who run a strong operation from Norton in Yorkshire that has sent out 44 winners this season, have stuck with Red Mirage through injury and form dips alike. Jason Hart, the horse's most regular jockey, has ridden it 17 times and won twice — a 12 per cent win rate that is better than the overall figures but still modest. When Red Mirage did win at Chester, Hart was aboard and described the horse's moment perfectly: it jumped out well, got a bit keen and overexcited in the early running, then settled into its rhythm and, when asked to go faster, "really did point his toe out nicely." That phrase — pointing its toe out — captures what this horse can do on its day: move with genuine purpose. The question now is whether that day comes again, or whether the horse has simply aged out of its winning window.
