Red Glory

The pattern is clear when you look at where Red Glory thrives. On slightly soft ground — the kind you get after rain but before it becomes a proper bog — he wins roughly one in every four races (2 wins from 8), a win rate nearly double his overall average. On firmer going he struggles badly, rarely finishing in the frame. This is the kind of horse that needs his moment: the right ground, the right race, and ideally back in form after a patchy spell. His last six outings tell a frustrating story — a fourth last month, then a third, a fifth, a win, and a pair of second-place finishes before that. It is the pattern of a horse hovering just outside the places more often than in them.

Henry De Bromhead's yard at Knockeen in County Waterford is among the busiest and most successful in Ireland, with 110 winners sent out this season alone. Red Glory is regularly ridden by Rachael Blackmore, one of the country's finest jockeys, though their record together stands at one win from six races. Despite the talent around him, Red Glory remains a horse racing on the margins — capable enough to win occasionally, but needing everything to break right. At eight years old, time may be working against him, but if the rain comes and the ground softens up, he could yet remind people why he was worth the patience.
