Recon Mission

The first win came at Sandown Park in July 2022, and the most recent at Lingfield Park in April 2025, which tells you something interesting in itself: this is a horse still finding ways to win at ten years old, an age when most racehorses have long since retired to a quieter life. The Lingfield win was 13 months ago, and the last six runs — a mix of sixth, second, third, seventh, third, and sixth — suggest a horse hovering around the places without quite getting back to the top. A second place in that recent stretch shows the ability is still there.

What makes those two wins feel a little unlikely is that Recon Mission most often races at Class 5, which is one of the lower tiers of British racing, and has won zero times from 15 races at that level. Both career victories came elsewhere. That's a curious quirk — a horse that finds a way to win when stepped away from its usual company but goes quiet when back in familiar territory.

The partnership with jockey Jack Doughty has produced 1 win from 12 races together, a win rate of around 1 in 12, which is modest but tells you the combination has been through plenty together. Tony Carroll's yard in Worcestershire is clearly a busy, productive operation — 136 winners sent out this season alone — so Recon Mission is part of a team that clearly knows how to get horses winning. The horse raced just yesterday, which means whatever comes next is likely not far away.

At this stage of a long career, Recon Mission is not going to trouble the top races in Britain. But a horse still placing regularly at ten, with two wins to its name and a yard behind it that gets results, is one that earns its place in any field it enters.
