Raysham

The recent form makes for mixed reading. Back-to-back tenth-place finishes in the last two races are the low points, but scroll back a little and there are consecutive third-place finishes in there, which at least show the horse is capable of running competitively. The challenge for trainer Declan Carroll and his yard in Malton, North Yorkshire will be finding the right race to unlock that maiden win. Carroll has been in decent form this season — 22 winners from his stable is a solid body of work — so the experience is there to place a horse like this carefully.

Jockey Zak Wheatley has been Raysham's regular partner, riding together in 7 of the 9 career races without a win to show for it. That's a long partnership to still be searching for a breakthrough, though the pair clearly have an established understanding. Raysham has raced three times at Class 6 level — the most accessible tier of British racing — and has yet to win there either, which is the level where you'd most expect a win to come eventually if the horse is going to get off the mark at all.

Having raced just yesterday, Raysham is very much an active runner still in the process of finding its feet. At 4 years old, there is still time, and trainers like Carroll tend to know when a horse needs patience rather than a change of direction. Whether Raysham can turn those placed efforts into a win remains to be seen, but the racing is still going on — and in this sport, one good day can change the story entirely.
