Over longer distances, between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, Rapid Mission has won 1 from 3 races — that is a 33% win rate, which is actually a strong return for any horse. That sole career win at Limerick came over this kind of trip, and it suggests the horse does at least have a trip that suits it. The problem is that those opportunities have been rare, and exploiting them consistently has proved beyond the horse so far.

The yard behind Rapid Mission is based in Sherborne, Dorset, under trainer Syd Hosie, a small operation that has still managed 8 winners this season — no mean feat. Hosie will be well aware that his horse is more competitive over a longer trip, and the challenge is finding the right race to unlock that again. In the level of races Rapid Mission typically enters — the Class 4 tier, which is solidly mid-range British racing — the horse has yet to win from 6 attempts. That is a blank record at its most common level, which adds to the puzzle.

Raced just one day ago, Rapid Mission is clearly still being kept busy. The hope from the Hosie yard will be that the right conditions, at the right distance, eventually click into place again the way they did that day at Limerick. It has happened once, which at least proves it is possible. Whether it happens again is the question that keeps racing interesting.
