Qitaal

Those three wins have come at decent tracks. The first arrived at Nottingham in October 2021, and the most recent came at Chester in September 2024 — a course that rewards horses who handle a tight, turning track. Chester is the kind of place that sorts out the specialists from the tourists, and Qitaal clearly had the answer that day. That win, though, was now 20 months ago, and the last six races have produced no victories, with a best finish of third — a reminder that this horse is consistent enough to place, but a win has been elusive lately.

The biggest challenge Qitaal faces is its usual level of competition. The horse has run 14 times in Class 2 races — among the top tier of racing in Britain — without winning a single one. That is a tough ask for any horse, and it tells you something important: Qitaal is good enough to be entered against the very best, but has not yet been able to beat them when it counts most. Its sweet spot appears to be distances between a mile and a quarter to a mile and two furlongs, winning 1 of 6 races at those trips, or about 1 in 6 — solid, if not spectacular.

Regular partner Joe Fanning has been in the saddle for 13 of those races together, winning just the once — roughly 1 in every 13 — though the pair clearly know each other well by now. The yard itself is in excellent form this season, having sent out 128 winners, so the support structure around Qitaal is as strong as it gets. Raced just one day ago and still active, the question now is simple: can the ground come up soft again at the right moment? When it does, Qitaal has a habit of reminding everyone exactly what it is capable of.
