Since that breakthrough three months ago, form has been mixed. The most recent six races tell the story of a horse treading water: 15th place just yesterday, then 9th, 7th, 1st, 7th, and 11th before that. There is nothing here to suggest an upward trajectory, but the single 1st-place finish in that sequence reinforces that the horse can win when the conditions and opposition align. What Purest Time needs is consistency, and that remains elusive. Five places from 16 races shows the horse is competitive often enough to earn minor honors, but converting those near-misses into wins remains the puzzle.
Ian Williams's Portway yard has been in flying form this season, with 96 winners already, so Purest Time has the tactical support and training quality behind it. Whether the horse can add a second win to its tally remains the question—and whether it does may well depend on whether Windsor, or a similar course and race type, comes around again soon.
