Principality

The most striking thing about Principality is what it does at Goodwood, one of Britain's most beautiful and technically demanding tracks — a switchback course on a Sussex hillside that horses either take to or they don't. Principality takes to it. Two wins from five races there, a 40% win rate at a single venue, is the kind of statistic that makes trainers plan their season around it. The first of those Goodwood wins came on 9 June 2024, and it clearly wasn't a fluke.

Harry Eustace trains Principality out of Newmarket, the heartland of British racing, and his yard has been in fine form this season — 24 winners already. Eustace has clearly found the right conditions for this horse: normal ground, not too firm, not too soft. On a good surface, Principality has won 2 of 7 races, roughly 1 in every 3 or 4 outings. On other ground, the results fall away sharply. Knowing that about your horse is half the battle.

Where the profile gets complicated is at the top level. Principality has run seven races at Class 2 — some of the better races in the calendar — and has yet to win any of them. Six places from those attempts show it belongs in that company, but winning is a different ask. For now, Eustace has found the sweet spot: aim it slightly lower, keep the ground right, and the horse delivers.

The recent form tells that story neatly. A win at Nottingham just this week, the most recent of the last six runs showing a 1-11-5-4-3-5 sequence — inconsistent on the face of it, but with a victory at either end of that stretch. Principality is a horse that needs things to fall right, but when they do, it gets the job done. At four years old, with form this current and a course record at Goodwood that any trainer would envy, it is absolutely one to watch next time it heads to Sussex.
