What makes the picture a little more complicated is where Powernap has been competing. Class 5 is one of the more modest levels of British racing, essentially the entry point for horses still finding their feet, and yet even here the record reads zero wins from four attempts. That 3rd place finish does suggest the horse is not completely out of its depth, but turning near-misses into victories has proven frustratingly difficult.
Powernap is trained by Jessica Bedi at Kirklevington in North Yorkshire, a small yard that has sent out two winners so far this season. It is a modest operation, and with a horse yet to break its duck, patience is clearly the order of the day. The horse raced just yesterday, so the yard — sorry, the team — are clearly keeping Powernap busy and looking for the right opportunity. Sometimes with younger horses, persistence is the strategy: keep running, keep learning, and hope that experience eventually clicks into a result.
At three years old, there is still time. Some horses simply take longer to mature, and an 0-from-8 record at this stage of a career is not unheard of for horses that eventually do find their level. But the clock is ticking, and the gap between that promising 3rd and an actual win will need to close soon if Powernap is going to give everyone involved something to celebrate.
