That said, context matters with young horses. Two-year-olds are essentially teenagers being asked to compete professionally, and it is not unusual for them to take several races just to figure out what is being asked of them. Postcard raced just one day ago, which means Adam Kirby and his team at Kirtling, on the outskirts of Newmarket, have had almost no time to assess what happened and decide where to go next.
Kirby's yard has sent out six winners this season, which shows the operation is capable of producing results. Whether Postcard becomes one of those success stories remains to be seen, but at two years old, the horse's story is far from written. Some horses simply need time, and the page, for now, is still mostly blank.
