The yard behind Play Me is Jim Boyle's operation, based right there in Epsom, Surrey — the same town as the track where the horse finally broke its duck. Boyle has sent out 25 winners this season, so this is a yard that knows how to get a horse to the line first. The fact that it took until August to find the winning formula with Play Me says more about how competitive even the lower end of the sport can be than it does about any lack of effort from the team.

Donagh Murphy has been the regular rider, taking the reins in 10 of Play Me's 18 races and winning once together — a partnership that wins roughly 1 in every 10 races. That is not a brilliant ratio, but it represents a real working relationship built across a season, and Murphy was in the saddle for that Epsom win.

The distance that suits Play Me best is around a mile and a tenth to a mile and two furlongs — the horse has won 1 of 8 races at those trips, a 12% win rate, which is comfortably its best. Over other trips, the numbers fall away sharply. Play Me competes mostly at Class 5, the bread-and-butter level of British racing, winning 1 from 11 at that grade.

Raced as recently as yesterday, the horse is clearly fit and active. Whether there is another Epsom moment waiting somewhere down the road remains to be seen, but this is a horse that clearly saves its best for home.
